Astronomical Tides and Turbulent Mixing in ROMS/TOMS

چکیده

The approach is to incorporate latest developments in turbulence and tidal research and modeling into ROMS. This project complements well, the AESOP program, the ONR DRI on subgrid-scale parameterization and skill assessment of numerical ocean models as well as the new Characterization and Modeling of Archipelago Strait Dynamics (CMASD) DRI. Using the Adriatic Sea (and North Indian Ocean) ROMS/TOMS as the test bed, we are incorporating direct astronomical forcing of the 11 major tides in the global ocean: semidiurnal M2, S2. N2, K2; diurnal K1, O1, P1 and Q1; long period Mf, Mm and Ssa. The co-oscillating barotropic tides are prescribed from Kantha’s tidal model. Note that many global ocean models such as the ones resulting from NASA initiatives do not perform well in some marginal seas and it is essential that a regional model be used. Note also that compound tides such as M4 will be generated by the nonlinear model itself and is an indirect result of the principal astronomical tidal forcing.

ROMS/TOMS Tangent Linear and Adjoint Models: Testing and Applications

Our long-term technical goal is to produce a tested tangent linear and adjoint model for ROMS/TOMS (Regional Ocean Modeling System/Terrain-Following Ocean Modeling System) that is suitable for general use by ROMS/TOMS modelers. This is complementary to the Kalman Filter, ESSE, and Green’s Functions techniques being developed in other contexts. Our long-term scientific goal is to model and predi...

Mixing by Tidal Interaction with Sloping Boundaries

The process of mixing by tides interacting with topography involves several stages. First some fraction of the energy contained in the barotropic tide must be converted into baroclinic energy, through the generation of internal tides and turbulent boundary layers. Secondly, the energy in the internal tides must be transmitted into smaller vertical wavelengths, thereby increasing the vertical sh...

Spatial and temporal variability of turbulent mixing in an estuary

Observations with a microstructure/CTD proŽ ler and an ADCP during Ž ve cruises in 1994/95 provide a glance at the turbulent mixing climate of a partially mixed estuary, the Hudson River. The cruises took place under widely varying conditions of river discharge and external forcing by water level uctuations in New York Bight. Tidal and fortnightly variability patterns of stratiŽ cation, shear...

Tidally driven mixing in a numerical model of the ocean general circulation

Astronomical data reveals that approximately 3.5 terawatts (TW) of tidal energy is dissipated in the ocean. Tidal models and satellite altimetry suggest that 1 TW of this energy is converted from the barotropic to internal tides in the deep ocean, predominantly around regions of rough topography such as midocean ridges. A global tidal model is used to compute turbulent energy levels associated ...

Turbulence measurements in a small subtropical estuary under king tide conditions

In natural waterways and estuaries, the understanding of turbulent mixing is critical to the knowledge of sediment transport, stormwater runoff during flood events, and release of nutrient-rich wastewater into ecosystems. In the present study, some field measurements were conducted in a small subtropical estuary with micro-tidal range and semi-diurnal tides during king tide conditions: i.e., th...
